3 Players I Think Will Fall Down Draft Boards At The Scouting Combine

20 Feb

When the annual NFL Scouting Combine comes around there are always a few things that are guaranteed. Media and fans alike will drool all over anyone that runs a sub 4.4 forty yard dash. Some unknown players will rise up boards. And some well known players will slide down boards. Some people will tell you the Combine is no longer a big deal to a lot of teams. But guess what? All 32 teams still send entire front offices and coaching staffs there for a reason. In my latest installment of my Scouting Combine preview, I want to highlight three players I think will leave Indianapolis in a worse place than when they entered it.

#1. CB Darqueze Dennard (Michigan State)

One of the most dominating seasons turned in by a Cornerback in College Football history was turned in by Michigan State’s Darqueze Dennard in 2013. But the level of competition in a very weak Big 10 conference has to come into question. Especially the Wide Receiver position. The best Big 10 WR in the 2014 draft, Penn State’s Allen Robinson, did not even face Michigan State in 2013. Dennard has questionable speed as well. Many think he will run somewhere between a 4.52 and 4.57 40 which will push him to more of a zone coverage scheme. Which is not his forte,

#2. WR Mike Evans (Texas A&M)

At 6’5 225 lbs, Mike Evans looks the part of a big, physical Wide Receiver. The problem with Evans is he is a bit of a one trick pony. He was so much bigger than any Cornerback in College that he simply out jumped all defenders on downfield jump balls. So you are saying “well, Calvin Johnson does the same thing” No he doesn’t. Calvin Johnson runs the entire route tree and has 4.3 speed. Evans just runs sideline go routes and back shoulder fades. Furthermore he is rumored to have 4.55 straight line speed. He has a hard time with change of direction. He reminds me of 2008 draftees James Hardy (Indiana) and Limas Sweed (Texas). Both were tall WR’s who many fans thought would be the next great, big WR’s in the NFL. Both were second round picks. Both were out of the league within three seasons.

#3.  OT Cyrus Kouandijo (Alabama)

If you run a pure zone blocking scheme, Kouandijo can play either Offensive Tackle spot. But he simply is not a mauler in a power blocking scheme. He had a terrible Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma. And I have never really seen him stand out in any game he played at Alabama. He leaves a lot to be desired in his pass blocking skills. I believe Scouts have already started downgrading Kouandijo since the process started. The Combine will likely continue to push him into the second round.

3 Names You Will Know After The Scouting Combine

18 Feb

Every year there are a handful of players that go into the NFL Scouting Combine as relative unknowns. Then after a big performance is on everyone’s radar. Vernon Davis’ sub 4.4 40 yard dash catapulted him into a top 10 pick in 2006. Chris Johnson’s sub 4.3 40 moved him into the first round of the 2008 draft. And in the 2014 Scouting Combine this weekend, there will be some breakout performers. Here is my short list of three to watch as potential breakout performers.

#1. TE Colt Lyerla (Oregon)                                                                                                                                                                                                           Colt Lyerla has everything any GM wants out of a Tight End physically. He is 6’5 ad weighs in at 250 lbs. And is believed to be set to run a 4.5 forty yard dash at the combine. He has been compared to Rob Gronkowsi. Unfortunately, the comparisons are both on and off the field. Lyerla left the Oregon Ducks after a one game suspension on October 7, 2013. On December 27, 2013 he pleaded guilty to possession of Cocaine. But as we know in the NFL, if you are talented, they will give you a second chance. Lyerla is believed to have a 40 inch vertical jump, an almost 11 foot broad jump, and a 4.5 forty yard dash. This is a player that off the field stuff will keep him off a lot of teams draft boards. But with a standout performance at the Combine, he will move up a lot of teams boards in a weaker year for Tight Ends in the draft.

#2. CB Bradley Roby (Ohio State)                                                                                                                                                                                            Bradley Roby is already a borderline first round pick according to most experts. I have him as my #2 overall Cornerback behind Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert. But after the Combine I fully expect Bradley Roby to solidify himself as the #2 CB on most people’s boards. Roby possesses world class track speed and could break into the rare 4.2 forty club at the Combine. He could move himself into the top 15 of this draft with a good performance this weekend.

 #3 DE/OLB Larry Webster  (Bloomsburg)

Larry Webster has drawn a lot of comparisons to both current and former NFL Edge Rushers. I think he is a mix of former Dolphins and Jets future Hall of Famer Jason Taylor. And Cincinnati Bengals DE Michael Johnson. The 6’6 250 lbs small school product has been turning heads with his size/speed combo. Look for a 40 somewhere near a 4.6 and top tier vertical and broad jumps.

Pre 2014 Scouting Combine Top 10 Positional Rankings

17 Feb

I am going to tell you what many “draftniks” will not. There is not a lot of typical first round talent in this years draft. Sure there will be 32 players drafted in the first round. So technically there will be 32 first rounders. But I think the value, like last year, will come in the second day. The deepest position this year is Wide Receiver hands down. We could see as many as 15 WR’s given day one and day two draft grades. The worst position is the Defensive Line. I do not see a lot of top level talent at this position in this draft.

Hour 4 NFL Combine Recap

23 Feb

Not a lot to report from hour #4 from the NFL Combine. The Tight End Group #1 is doing their Vertical Jumps, Broad Jumps, etc… Meanwhile on the field Group 2 is wrapping up on the field drills.

As I mentioned in my hour #3 recap, a lot of top linemen had rough 40 times, especially 10 yard splits. But they made up for it on the field in individual drills.

I guess with not a lot going on I will give you my big 3 winners and big 3 losers for the Offensive Linemen from this Scouting Combine.

Winners

#1. Terron Armstead (Arkansas Pine Bluff)

Armstead had the best 40 time for all Offensive Linemen with an official 4.71 and the 2nd best 10 yard split at 1.64. He also had 31 reps on the bench press and an impressive individual drills session.

#2. Lane Johnson (Oklahoma)

2nd best 40 at 4.72 and best 10 yard split at 1.61. Johnson was the most athletic looking Offensive Linemen in both groups.

#3. Eric Fisher (Central Michigan)

Fisher had a much better day that Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel and could end up passing him up come draft day

Losers

#1. D.J. Fluker (Alabama)

Fluker looked slow in individual drills displaying poor footwork. Was extremely slow in the 40 yard dash, but his 1.83 10 yard split shows a lack of quickness and 21 reps on the bench could be an area of concern.

#2. Travis Bond (North Carolina)

Like Fluker, Bond looked slow, did not display much quickness

#3. Braxton Cave (Notre Dame)

Cave did not have a good Senior Bowl week and the disappointment spilled into the Scouting Combine. He is slow, has no quickness, and may end up not even being drafted.

Hour 3 NFL Combine Group 2 O-Linemen Run 40′s

23 Feb

Almost the entire third hour of the NFL Combine today consisted of group 2 of the Offensive Linemen running 40′s. Unlike group 1 that saw only one player, Arkansas Pine Bluff’s Terron Armstead run under 5.0 seconds (4.65), group 2 had five. Oklahoma’s Lane Johnson (4.75), Oregon’s Kyle Long (4.93 1st run), Virginia Tech’s Vince Painter 4.87, California’s Brian Schwenke (4.97), and James Madison’s Earl Watford (4.97) .

Oklahoma’s Lane Johnson also had the fastest 10 yard split of all the linemen today with a 1.61 split. Johnson is a former QB and TE in college.

Oregon’s Kyle Long is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Howie Long and brother of St.Louis Rams DE Chris Long. Long, Land Johnson, and Vince Painter look more like Defensive Ends that Offensive Linemen. Their bodies are much leaner and muscular than what most people think of when they think of a Offensive Lineman.

Many experts expect Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel to be the #1 overall pick. He did not put up great numbers in the 40 with runs of 5.22 and 5.35 with 10 yard splits of 1.82 and 1.81. The numbers are right at average to below average for this years group of Offensive Linemen.

Two of this drafts top interior linemen, Alabama’s Chance Warmack and Kentucky’s Larry Warford was in group 2 as well both ran in the mid 5.5′s and with Warmack posting a 1.83 10 yard split and Warford with a 1.91. Neither looked as fluid or athletic as Jonathan Cooper from North Carolina with group 1.

San Jose State’s David Quessenberry is one of this drafts most under rated players. He came in at a 5.06 with a 1.72 split. I love his feet and punch but he needs to add about 10-15 lbs to his 6’7 302 lbs frame. He reminds me a lot of Tennessee Titans Pro Bowl OLT Michael Roos.

Cal’s Brian Schwenke had a 1.68 10 yard split and is believed to be the most explosive interior O-Lineman in this draft class.

Several O-Linemen did not run in group 2 due to injuries. Those players included Khaled Holmes (USC), Barrett Jones (Alabama), Luke Marquardt (Azusa Pacific), Xavier Nixon (Florida State), Dallas Thomas (Tennessee), Brennan Williams (North Carolina), and Brian Winters (Kent State)

Here is the complete “Unofficial” 40 times for both groups of O-Linemen with 10 yard splits

Hour 2 of NFL Scouting Combine-Group 1 On-Field Drills

23 Feb

First thing that really stood out was during a “pull” drill, North Carolina OG Jonathan Cooper was snapping a ball instead of coming out of a 3-point stance. Apparently enough coaches think Cooper could also play Center and wanted to see how quick he was with a snap and pull.

Alabama OT D.J. Fluker continued to struggle and just doesn’t look like he will be athletic enough to play OT in the NFL. Will likely be kicked inside.

Arkansas’ Alvin Bailey is indeed done for the day after pulling up with a Hamstring injury in the 40 yard dash

Arkansas Pine Bluff’s Terron Armstead continued his outstanding day showing great feet in the kick step drill.

Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher is solidifying his spot as a top 10 pick with his performance in individual drills. In the kick step drills his footwork is outstanding. No question his position in the NFL will be Left Tackle.

We saw group 2 for the first time today which includes Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel and Alabama OG Chance Warmack. The group was doing the Broad Jump which measures explosiveness. Those numbers will not be available until the end of today at the earliest.

That’s it for Hour #2. Group #2 is getting ready to start their 40 yard dashes.

Hour 1 of NFL Scouting Combine Offensive Line

23 Feb

The most impressive run in the first group in the first hour of Offensive Linemen was Arkansas Pine Bluff’s Terron Armstead who ran an unofficial 4.65 with an amazing 1.64 10 yard split. Anything sub 5.0 seconds is considered very good for an O-Linemen. So a 4.65 is amazing. His second run stood up with a 4.71 with a 1.69 10 yard split. Armstead was already shooting up a lot of draft boards before the Combine. I see him as a future starting Offensive Left Tackle in the NFL, likely in a Zone Scheme like the Raiders, Texans, and Redskins utilize.

Jeff Baca from UCLA also had two good runs with 5.03 and 5.13 with 10 yard splits of 1.68 and 1.75. Baca can play all three interior line positions.

Arkansas’ Alvin Bailey pulled up on his second run after about 20 yards with a Hamstring injury and will likely set out the rest of the days workout

Three players from group one, NC State’s Zach Allen, LSU’s Chris Faulk, and West Texas A&M Manase Foketi did not participate in the 40 yard dash.

The top players as far as draft status in group one are Central Michigan OT Eric Fisher who ran a 5.07 and 5.01 with a 1.7 and 1.73 10 yard split. Fisher will likely be a top 10 pick and can play in any scheme. North Carolina Offensive Guard Jonathan Cooper ran an impressive 5.13 and 5.25 with 1.73 and 1.74 10 yard splits which is very good for a 311 lbs OG. Alabama’s OT D.J Fluker went for 5.35 and 5.32 with 1.91 and 1.83 10 yard splits at 333 lbs. Fluker could play Right Tackle but will likely have to kick inside where he will be a better fit in the NFL.

In on field drills North Carolina’s Travis Bond struggled looking very stiff bending at the waist a lot and not looking very athletic. His college teammate Jonathan Cooper looked phenomenal though in his drills looking very fluid for a big man. Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher displayed great feet but was a bit high in his drills. Alabama D.J. Fluker showed average to below average feet.
